Charitable
Giving
Charitable giving can take many forms. The simplest form of charitable giving involves direct outright gifts to charity either while an individual is living or at death. More sophisticated techniques range from split interest gifts like Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRAT’s , CRUT’s, and NIMCRUT’s) and Charitable Lead Trusts (CLAT’s and CLUT’s), to Private Foundations.
Wading through the ‘alphabet soup’ of advanced charitable planning can be frustrating without the proper legal advice.
Charitable gifts should be structured so that the form of the gift and the assets chosen to fund the gift result in the greatest tax advantage. At the same time the ‘tax tail’ should not wag the ‘charitable intent dog’. Essex Savings Bank’s Trust Department has the experience to work with an individual and his or her legal counsel to insure charitable objectives are met in the most efficient manner possible. Essex Savings Bank can provide comprehensive services including distributions to all beneficiaries, foundation administration, and tax compliance. In addition, we have the experience to serve as Trustee or Agent for charitable foundations and endowment funds.
